Gillian Samuel, Senior Public Involvement in Research Coordinator
I am a Senior Public Involvement in Research Coordinator at McPin. I am currently working on the NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR) Public Mental Health Programme and the Areas for Research Innovation (AfRI) Innovations in Involvement project.
I offer advice and guidance to research teams to enable public involvement that is relevant, timely and meaningful. I enjoy introducing new ways of working, including how to build trust with and engage community organizations, encouraging work to be co-produced and findings celebrated.
My background in community work informs my practice and my lived experience in mental health offers an expertise which runs throughout my work.
Outside of work I enjoy looking after my wellbeing through yoga practice and swimming and have a special interest in playing the tenor recorder.

Through years of experience working in the mental health voluntary sector, I adopted creative ways of working which I continue to use in my current practice. For example, inspired by Indian street art, I co-designed novel visuals expanding the PI&E Charter into a training which appeals to a wide audience.
For my interest and growing expertise in working with communities, I won the NIHR SPHR PI&E award for Equity & Inclusion.
I have also co-authored published papers including exploring co-locating public mental health interventions and public perspectives on inequality and mental health: A peer research study
More recently, I was invited to make a podcast for the NIHR SPHR Researchers in The Making podcast series, where I am featured on Episode 14 (Spotify)
