The articles in BMC Public Health, co-guest-edited by McPin research director Vanessa Pinfold, range from participant engagement to preventative measures.

As internet-based mental health interventions continue to rise in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, web and mobile-based platforms are offering even more ways for people with mental health issues to access support.

BMC Public Health – an open access, peer-reviewed journal – recently called for submissions on the topic.

McPin co-founder and researcher director Vanessa Pinfold was one of three guest editors looking at the articles. She was joined by Dr Leslie Roos of University of Manitoba and Dr Karin Waldherr, Ferdinand Porsche FERNFH – Distance Learning University of Applied Sciences, Austria.

About the collection

The journal welcomed submissions exploring the improvement of mental health through internet-based interventions.

This led to a diverse collection of articles covering topics from participant engagement to preventive measures, wellbeing promotion for vulnerable populations, equitable access, and cultural diversity considerations.

The open access nature of the publication means that the articles are available online for free, promoting greater access to evidence-based knowledge on mental health and potential interventions.

Empowering people to improve their wellbeing

While internet-based mental health interventions are on the rise, the call for submissions highlighted that they should be considered as a complement to the more traditional in-person support offered by healthcare personnel, rather than a replacement.

It goes on to discuss how the use of mental health platforms empowers the individual to proactively improve their mental wellbeing and learn how to cope with adversities in the future.
