Project overview
The Mental Health Mission (MHM) is a programme designed to improve mental health research. It aims to improve diagnosis, treatment and support for mental health issues in the UK. There are different projects going on around the country across many NHS sites and Universities – for this project (funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research), our research team is based in the Midlands Translational Centre at the University of Birmingham.
We will be working on children and young people’s mental health.
Project details
In 2021, the government set out 7 missions to help the NHS solve healthcare problems in the Life Sciences Vision. One of the missions was to increase the understanding and treatment of mental health conditions.
Through improving mental health research, the Mental Health Mission aims to change how we think about mental health and its treatment. This will help to address the impacts of mental health issues on individuals and our healthcare system.
McPin are working with the Midlands Mental Health Mission Translational Research Centre to advise on meaningful and effective lived experience involvement. We will also be supporting the Midlands Advisory Group (MAG). The group is being formed to provide lived experience expertise across the programme. Some of the work the youth advisors will be involved in will include:
- Monthly Midlands Advisory Group (MAG) sessions and opportunities to contribute on various projects when needed
- Using your voice to shape mental health research
- Developing youth-led events across the Midlands
- Collaborating with researchers to co-design projects
- Advising professionals and ensuring young voices are heard
- Helping to spread awareness of the mental health mission through blogs and podcasts
- Contributing to website design and development
- Training and skills development for public speaking, research skills and leadership
