What’s the project?

The project is a thesis research study which a researcher called James is completing as part of the course: Doctorate of Clinical Psychology at the University of East London.

The study is a qualitative research project, where he will be interviewing young people to ask about their experiences and perspectives of being discharged from an adolescent mental health ward.

The study has two research questions:

  1. How do young people describe their experiences of the discharge process from adolescent mental health wards?
  2. What could improve the discharge process from adolescent mental health wards for young people?

To participate in the study, young people must:

  • Be aged between 13-20 years
  • Have been discharged from an adolescent mental health ward within the last 2 years.

It is hoped the study will provide important research to the field of adolescent mental health.  There is currently very little research which has gathered young people’s views of their experiences of the discharge process from mental health wards. Young people’s views are vital in informing policy and guidance around their care.

James is asking young people to participate in 45-60 minute interviews online, on Microsoft teams.

Young people will also be asked to complete a demographic questionnaire. James is hoping to recruit between 10-15 young people.

  • Aged 13-20
  • Have been discharged from a UK adolescent mental health ward within the last 2 years.
  • Young people will need to be able to read/listen to and understand the materials in English.
  • Young people will also need to understand and respond verbally in English to the researcher’s questions. This is due to the unavailability of funds for interpreters and the importance of ensuring accurate understanding of such a sensitive topic.
