What’s the project?
Those who identify as a gender minority (those whose gender differs from sex assigned at birth) are thought to experience more mental health difficulties compared to those who identify as a cis-gender (those whose gender match the one they were assigned at birth). Even within gender minority groups, mental health difficulties can differ by sexuality and ethnicity. However, currently, most datasets collecting information about mental health difficulties have very few gender minority participants, so it is difficult to test this hypothesis.
Therefore, our project aims to explore the differences in mental health between gender minorities and cis-gender young adults between 16- and 32- years old by combining different datasets that have information on gender minority participants and mental health difficulties. By doing so, we will be able to inform policies that might reduce mental health inequalities between gender minority and cis-gendered young adults.
