Join the National Clinical Audit of Psychosis Service User & Carer Reference group

Psychosis

What’s the project?

National Clinical Audit of Psychosis (NCAP) aims to improve the quality of care that NHS Mental Health Trusts in England and Health Boards in Wales provide to people with psychosis.

Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) services are measured against criteria relating to the care and treatment they provide, so that the quality of care can be improved. The audit has been running since 2017 and is commissioned by HQIP on behalf of NHS England and Improvement.

See here for more information including past reports: About the National Clinical Audit of Psychosis (NCAP).

Who are the NCAP team?

The core NCAP team are based at the Royal College of Psychiatrists and includes a programme manager – Aimee Morris – who is our main contact. The team includes data analysts, two clinical advisors and a service user lead. For more information see here: Meet the team

We have been supporting the audit since 2021, helping to facilitate the Service User and Carer Reference group (SUCRG) which provides vital input into the audit amplifying the reporting with lived experience perspectives.

From 2021-2025 the SUCRG was hosted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and McPin was brought on board to support the running of the group and completion of co-produced audit reports.

From 2026-2027 we have been asked to host and run the group, which means members will be paid and supported by McPin.

This is a group of six people who work closely with a Royal College of Psychiatrists appointed Service User lead – Chris Kinsella – and the entire NCAP team.

The main role of the group is to support the reporting of the audit data in an annual review – October 2026 and July 2027.

To do this effectively it needs to meet regularly and link into the others parts of the NCAP programme including a service improvement programme and steering group meetings with clinicians.

  • People over the age of 18
  • Must have used early intervention in psychosis services – either themselves (service user) or supporting a family member or close friend (carer) – recently (in last 5 years)
  • Based in England or Wales
  • Strong interest in service improvement and using audit data to drive continuous development of mental health services for people experiencing psychosis

  • The group will meet regularly – usually for a monthly 2 hour meeting online but once a year for an all-day in person meeting in London.
  • There are two 2-hour online steering group meetings to attend – two members of the SUCRG attend each session.
  • There are also other tasks that happen outside of these meetings including reviewing documents and writing text for the audit reports.

  • Be able to attend in person meetings held in London once a year.
  • Feel passionately about improving mental health services.
  • Be able to critically engage with each other and listen, respect, and challenge differing opinions.

We are also able to reimburse reasonable expenses for travel and or any subsistence requirements that arise in attending an in-person meeting.
