Rain Within the Rainbow: understanding LGBTQ+ suicide and suicide prevention

LGBTQ+ • Lived experience • Suicide • Wellbeing

What’s the project?

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh are currently recruiting people to take part in their research study aiming to understand LGBTQ+ suicide and suicide prevention at all ages. The project, Rain Within the Rainbow, aims to find out more about what contributes to distress or crisis, what has helped people to stay safe and well, and what support people with personal experiences think should be available.

The Rain Within the Rainbow research team is interested in connecting with people from across the LGBTQ+ community, with a diversity of experiences related to suicide. So if you have personal experiences related to this project, the research team want to hear from you!

This study has been given ethical approval by the Ethics Review Team of the School of Health in Social Science, The University of Edinburgh.

Find out more

The Rain Within the Rainbow research team are looking for people to take part in one or more of the following in which you will be exploring issues surrounding LGBTQ+ suicide and suicide prevention:

  • An interview. This interview can happen either online or in person and could last up to 90 minutes long.
  • An online survey. This survey could take up to 30 minutes.
  • A self-completion leaflet – can be done anywhere.

All of these cover three main topics:

  • An opportunity to share anything that you would like the researchers to know about you, your identities and your experiences – before the discussion about your experience of suicide and suicide prevention.
  • After this you will be asked about your experience of suicidal distress, what has contributed to this as well as what has helped when things have been difficult.
  • Finally, you will be asked about what support you think would be helpful, for you or other people with similar experiences, in the future.

Interviews, in particular, can sometimes be difficult for people, and the organisers are doing everything they can to make these a positive experience. You will be asked about any access needs that you might have, in advance. During the interview you will have the opportunity to pause, or stop altogether, at any point you wish.

  • Identify as LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual/aromantic or any diverse gender or sexual identity)
  • Aged 13+
  • Living in the UK
  • Personal experience of suicidal thoughts, feelings or attempts
  • Must be based in the UK

Participants that take part in the interviews will be offered a £20 gift voucher for their time.
