Shape a research project to support young people who do not attend school

Young people

What’s the project?

Researchers at the University of Bristol are looking to better understand the mental health and well-being needs of children and young people who are not in school and the reasons they may not be attending school. The research project will help hear young peoples and families stories around barriers to attending school. It will also help inform how schools could be improved in the future to help more young people attend, but also to understand why school may not be the best place for some young people and the reasons why.

The researchers are looking to speak with around 6 young people for around 45 minutes, this will be an online meeting using Microsoft Teams. They are looking to hear your views on the types of questions they should be asking young people and families and what you think are the most important things to learn during this project.

There will be just one meeting but there may also be opportunity to participate in the research in 2025 if the study receives funding and you would be interested to take part.

The team are keen to speak to children and young people aged between 5-16 years who do not attend/regularly attend school. They are also happy to speak with people who are over 16 years who did not attend school to reflect on their experiences.

You will be paid a £20 voucher for your time.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please email [email protected] with brief answers to the following questions:

  1. What is your name?
  2. What is your date of birth?
  3. Why are you interested in this specific opportunity?
  4. Please briefly describe your experience of not attending school (e.g. how long you have not been in school, if you are home educated, if you have been excluded…)

5pm on Friday 22nd November 2024
