What’s the project?
Trigger warning // mention of self-harm, suicidality
Researchers at the University of Nottingham are doing research to help support LGBTQIA+ people who self-harm. The purpose of this study is to capture the views of LGBTQIA+ people regarding the novel Card Sort Task for Self-Harm (CaTS). The card sort task is used to look at the relationships between the many factors experienced by people who self-harm, how factors influence each other to increase or reduce self-harm risk, and to identify key tipping points which occur immediately prior to self-harm that can be addressed during intervention. The aim of this study is to capture data which will allow us the team develop a version of CaTS which is meaningful and appropriate to LGBTQIA+ people and their self-harm and, therefore, be suitable to use in research to investigate their self-harm pathway.

The team would like to do online 1-1 interviews with LGBTQIA+ people to capture their feedback on the existing card sort task (CaTS). Sessions will probably be via Zoom and will last no longer than 1-hour. The team aim to recruit between 5-10 people for this study and people only attend one online session.
Prior to the session the team will send you a copy of CaTS via email. Each card has a self-harm related concept written on it (i.e., ‘I felt depressed and sad’, ‘I felt very anxious’, ‘I felt defeated’). Many concepts will not be relevant to your own self-harm, but they will be relevant to others’. They will ask you to consider the concepts written on each card and whether the cards are, overall, appropriate to LGBQTIA+ self-harm. For example, are they worded appropriately or do any need rewording to capture LGBTQIA+ experiences better. Or are there factors that are missing from the existing task, but should be included as they are important factors to LGBTQIA+ self-harm?
You will not be required to discuss your own self-harm nor which concepts are specific to you. During the session, the team will ask you to discuss your views of the task and the overall relevance of concepts to LGBTQIA+ self-harm.
- Self-identified LGBTQIA+ people
- Aged 18 and above
- Based in the UK
- Have lived (past or present) experience of self-harm and/or suicidality
- This means you have intentionally harmed yourself or have had thoughts of harming yourself which you did not act upon
- A laptop, PC, or device, and stable internet access will be necessary to take part
You will receive a £10 Amazon voucher for your time.
You will be asked to complete a Wellbeing Plan prior to taking part, and to send a copy to us with your informed consent form. The Wellbeing Plan is important as it ensures the research team have appropriate and necessary information should any distress arise during or after the study. Because you provide the team with this information, it means they will be able to appropriately support you, if necessary. This includes a follow-up call to you from a member of the research team 24-hours after the study. If taking part in the study has caused distress, the researcher will encourage you to contact a trusted person (friend, family, charity organisation, or healthcare professional) who can provide support. The Wellbeing Plan will be kept for 6-months.
Please note, you will not be able to take part in the focus group session or 1-1 interview if the Wellbeing Plan has not been completed. This is to ensure your safety and wellbeing.
The team will also provide you with LGBTQIA+ and general self-harm and mental health support organisations, both in the Wellbeing Plan and in consent and debrief information.
