Shared decision making: The role of nurses, health care assistants, psychologists and other health professionals

CAMHS • Mental health services

What’s the project?

Andy, a PhD researcher from St Mary’s University is seeking young people’s views on what is important for him to consider for his PhD research project. Andy’s project explores the attitudes of nurses and other health professionals working in CAMHS (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services) towards shared decision making.

Shared decision making is the practice of having conversations about any decisions being made about a young persons’ care. These conversations are designed to help the young person understand the options, the pros and cons of each option, and how the options fit with their views, values and preferences.

The research considers shared decision making from the viewpoint of CAMHS professionals. It is important that young people who have accessed CAMHS help Andy design the research. Andy wants young people to tell him your views on what he needs to make sure he covers when researching shared decision making, and what needs to happen after this research project.

Andy will be recruiting a group of 4-5 young people to take part in a two-hour online workshop to discuss the plans for the project. You will be asked to give opinions on what matters most about the research so that it covers the things that are important to young people. You will be asked about anything that needs to be considered to make the research as thorough and relevant as possible to the experiences of children and young people who have accessed CAMHS. Another workshop will be held in 2028 to discuss the research that has taken place and find out what the young people taking part think needs to be explored by researchers next.
