What’s the project?
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is a mental health service that is a provided by the NHS; a form of talking therapy that is focused on helping you understand and accept difficult feelings, and providing you with the skills to make positive changes in your life.
Researchers from the University of Hertfordshire are aiming for young people who are accessing Dialectical Behavioural Therapy to tell the stories of their lives, and if there are particular stories or ways young people speak about their lives in the context of things such as culture, social media and how young people create meaning in their lives whilst accessing DBT.
The team hope to address the gap in the literature around young people’s perspectives and how young people speak about and make sense of their lives. The research team will conduct narrative interviews, which are guided by the participants and follow up prompts by the researcher, to explore their life stories. The research team will also be developing timelines with the participants to give focus to the interviews and provide prompts for discussion in the interviews.

The research team are looking for young people to provide feedback on interview setup and questions, and the communications materials such as the research advert and information sheets.
To do this, the team are looking for 1-3 young people to take part in a video call lasting around 1 hour to advise on this project, this is after a brief video call introducing yourselves and the team answering any questions you have about the project. The team are particularly interested in whether the interview questions and terms used are young people friendly, as narrative interviews differ from typical Q&A style interviews with the aim of allowing the participants to speak freely about what they want without too much researcher influence.
