What’s the project?
Samaritans’ Online Chat service is currently in a pilot phase with around 700 volunteers from nearly 80 branches across the UK supporting the service six evenings a week. The service makes it possible for users to chat with a trained Samaritan volunteer online, in real time.
Samaritans have partnered with The Tavistock Institute of Human Relations and Habitus Collective to evaluate the Online Chat pilot service. Peer researchers, who have lived experience, have been recruited to work with the research team. They will facilitate focus groups to gather feedback on the service. The focus group is designed to allow interested young people to share their thoughts in a way which feels comfortable. No one will have to answer anything they are not comfortable talking about.

We are looking for both young people and adults to take part in focus groups lasting 90 minutes. The aim of the focus groups is to find out about what might be important for in an online chat listening service, what their needs are surrounding such a service, and any impact the service may have had if they have used the chat before.
- Must be based in the UK
- Aged between 11-17 (young people’s focus group) or 18+ (adult focus group)
- The team are looking for a diverse range of young people who have experience of suicidal thoughts, self-harm and/or have lost someone to suicide, and have possibly used Samaritans’ Online Chat service.
The team will provide you with a £25 Love2Shop voucher as a thank you for your time. The focus group will be a relaxed atmosphere with food and plenty of spaces to take a break or some time for yourself.
