Remit of the group
PRIMER is a public involvement and engagement (PIE) group based at the Centre for Primary Care (CPC) at the University of Manchester. The group was established in 2009 and works closely with researchers to encourage and support PIE. PRIMER is the first PIE group in the UK to focus on PIE in a primary care research context. The group is comprised of 20 members with diverse backgrounds, expertise and experiences of using primary care services. The core objectives of the Group, articulated by members, are to:
- work with researchers to offer best practice advice on PPI
- input into research at an early stage when there is still an opportunity to shape the research
- suggest topics for future research
- network with other groups to promote best practice in PPI
- contribute to policy within the CPC and through broader affiliations, including the National School for Primary Care Research (NSPCR).
The PRIMER group serves an important function as a source of PIE advice and contribution to research projects (including mental health specific projects), from developing PRIMER ideas into proposals to partnering with researchers in shaping the delivery of research and subsequent dissemination. Feedback is routinely collected from researchers working with PRIMER and the feedback received to date is a positive endorsement of the value of the groups’ input to research ideas, design and development.
